Supplying full previews of children's books to CataList

Use the CataList FTP to supply full book preview files. If you wish to supply other content, such as cover, author, or interior images; teacher or reading group guides; table of contents; or excerpts, use the BiblioShare FTP.

About full book previews

A full book preview, also called an F&G (folded and gathered), is a full sample of a forthcoming book that is made available to professionals in the book trade. This resource is particularly useful for library acquisition teams and booksellers, as they can view the full content of a book to support their purchasing decisions.

Publishers subscribing to CataList can upload full previews for forthcoming children’s books, and share them with verified types of CataList accounts. Accounts can access the previews on both the title detail page and the catalogue scrolling view.

  • On the title detail page, the View the full book button displays beneath the cover or interior images, if available:

  • In the scroll view, the View the full book button displays in the Content Preview section above any available interior images:

User access and display rules

Full book previews are only available to the publisher account and CataList users who have verified industry accounts (this includes librarians, retailers, wholesalers, and sales agents). Unlike other supplemental content, full book previews can expire, and are made unavailable on the title’s publication date.

Users are prohibited from downloading full book previews. However, there are a number of ways to adjust its display on CataList for a more comfortable reading experience.

A reader can:

  • Go to a specific page.

  • Go to the previous or next page.

  • View one page or two pages at a time.

  • Enable scrolling.

  • Resize to fit an entire page or the width of the page.

  • View in full screen.

  • Zoom in or out.

Accepted files

CataList accepts full book previews that are supplied as PDFs. In order for the system to successfully process and display your PDF file:

  • The filename must include the ISBN.

  • The ISBN must already be available in CataList as a public or trade-only title, and must be associated with your CataList publisher account.

  • The file must be uploaded into the /fullbook subdirectory of the CataList FTP (see more about the CataList FTP in the following section).

  • Distributors or sales agents who sell titles that are listed in other CataList accounts will need to post files in the appropriate FTP account. If you’re unsure of which account to use, contact catalist@booknetcanada.ca.

Keep preview files under 30 MB to prevent loading delays.

Upload files to the CataList FTP

The CataList FTP is different from the BiblioShare FTP, which is where publishers can upload cover, author, and interior images, as well as excerpts, table of contents, teacher guides, and reading group guides (learn more about supplying supplemental content using the BiblioShare FTP).

If you don’t have credentials to access the CataList FTP, contact catalist@booknetcanada.ca or your CataList account manager.

Once you have your CataList FTP credentials, you are ready to upload your full book previews.

  1. Connect to the CataList FTP using the FTP client software of your choice (for example, FileZilla).

    1. Enter the host name: ftp.bnccatalist.ca.

    2. Enter your username and password.

  2. Open the /fullbook subdirectory.

  3. Add your full book preview files into the /fullbook subdirectory.

If your file is accepted for processing, the preview will be available for display in CataList within a few hours.

Replace an existing full book preview file

If you need to update a full book preview that is already on CataList, connect to the CataList FTP and upload the new file using the Upload steps.

Remove an existing full book preview from CataList

If you wish to fully remove a full book preview from CataList, contact catalist@booknetcanada.ca. Otherwise, the full book preview will automatically expire on the title’s publication date and be hidden from verified accounts.
