Using Filezilla to logon to BiblioShare's FTP

BNC BiblioShare's FTP has been intentionally left as "simple" in order to prevent problems with companies loading data. The material left on our FTP does not require high security, and we do not store anything on the FTP.  Files are automatically moved off shortly after arriving, so there is no need to be concerned that covers and ONIX files are left unduly exposed.

Most FTP software defaults to allow "simple" un-encrypted file transfer, but in February 2015 Filezilla – the most commonly used FTP client – updated itself to use an encryption setting as it's default – including updating "Site Manager" accounts to their new default.  This means companies trying to sign in using "Quickconnect" or their now changed "Site Manager" account get failure messages.   

It's easily fixed.   If you normally use "Quickconnect" you'll need to set up BiblioShare account in the the "Site Manager":

File / Site Manager

General Tab:

  • Host:  ftp.biblioshare.ca
  • Protocol, select:  "FTP - File Transfer Protocol"
  • Encryption, select:  "Only use plain FTP (insecure)"
  • Logon Type, select:  Normal
  • User and Password as assigned to you

Other Tabs:

  • Default and autodetect settings are fine.

 

Everything thereafter should work fine and the "Site Manager" settings will not change (at least until a Filezilla update messes things up again).
