ONIX 3.0.4 is the new version on ONIX with better support for Digital Products and capable of a much higher degree of accuracy to support truly international data exchange. There have been a couple of major structural changes since it's inital release in 2009 and any implementer should ensure that they are using ONIX 3.0.3.5 October 26, 2018 is latest version of ONIX.  It is a fairly minor revision adding a new element to Block 3 (Content) to support chapter-level audio time codes, and two Block 6 (Product Supply) additions to support pallet quantity and designate tax exempt.  Several other minor updates and changes are detailed in the specification (look under "Introduction" for a summary of revision changes and details under "Document History."  Appendix A1 is a complete list of all ONIX composite and elements in ONIX file or schema order.)

In North America actual use of ONIX 3.0 is growing but still limited and most largely limited to digital data.  Most print data exchange remains using ONIX 2.1 (though increasingly "test" files for ONIX 3.0 exist).

The value in the transition to ONIX 3.0 comes from the ability to better sell books and identification of any new data points that would help your business work better will increase the likelihood of their adoption by the industry.   Already identified

Editeur.org has a number of papers describing the changes as well as an overview document Best Practice Guidelines that explain both what needs to be recorded and why.
